About Nature Narratives of Hope

Nature Narratives of Hope

In a world increasingly defined by climate crises and political turmoil, it is easy to become discouraged. Yet, in the midst of uncertainty, voices of hope serve as a powerful reminder of human resourcefulness and determination. Nature Narratives of Hope was created to acknowledge despair but also to cultivate hope, purpose, and action in response to environmental and societal challenges.

Started by students at the University of Colorado Denver, Nature Narratives of Hope seeks to understand how we think about nature in the face of climate change and political upheaval. By providing a platform for personal reflections, the project challenges dominant media narratives on climate and justice, instead offering a space for inspiration and collective vision.

Mission Statement

The mission of Nature Narratives of Hope is to gather and amplify messages of hope, sharing them with the broader community through social media, university networks, and public outreach. By collecting and sharing these nature narratives, we aim to inspire dialogue, create solidarity, and empower individuals to believe in and work toward a better future. We recognize that hope is not naive optimism—it is a commitment to action despite uncertainty.

The Project

The project is based on four guiding questions designed to capture a diverse range of perspectives on nature, personal motivations, and hopes for the future:

  • What does “nature” mean to you?
  • Do you care about nature? Why or why not?
  • What inspires you to learn about nature?
  • How do you feel about nature’s future—hopeful, skeptical, curious, or something else?

We invite students, faculty, friends, and community members to participate, share, and spread words of hope. Administered anonymously through Qualtrics, the questions are open to all who wish to contribute.
